How much does it cost to become a US citizen?

Hello, we have investigated several sources of information to find out the price to pay for being an American citizen. We hope that the information is useful for you. Historically, immigration fees are always on the rise. But once you are a citizen, none of that matters because you will never pay an immigration fee again.

How much does it cost to become a US citizen?

The current application fee for U.S. citizenship is $ 640 plus the biometrics fee of $ 85 giving a $ 725 total price.

There are only two options if you want to live and work in the United States permanently: citizenship and permanent residence. Permanent residents have to pay $ 455 every ten years to renew their green cards. Over the course of a lifetime, that’s almost $ 3,000 and potentially a lot more, as immigration rates are likely to continue to rise.

Price may vary

Not everyone must pay full government fees to be a US citizen.

  • Those who apply for U.S. citizenship based on their military service are exempt from both the application filing fee and the biometrics fee.
  • Applicants over the age of 75 are exempt from the biometrics fee only.
  • Everyone else must pay both fees, unless eligible for an income-based fee waiver or reduction.

To qualify for a rate reduction, your total annual household income must equal 150% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Only the application filing fee will be reduced (by 50%, from $ 640 to $ 320).

The biometric fee will remain at $ 85. So, if you are eligible for the fee reduction, being a US citizen will cost just $ 405. (However, if you’re 75 or older, your biometrics fee waiver means you’ll pay just $ 320.)
